Chapter two: Trust the process

As a college student, days tend to feel like there isn't enough time to do everything you have to do or want to do. Most of the time theres this constant battle of what to prioritize first; schoolwork, physical health, mental health, relationships, hobbies, and the list goes on. Though there is an importance of balance and being able to maintain all of the above.

Yin Yang the ancient symbol of harmony that reminds us that life is a balancing act and most fulfilling when we learn to embrace its dualities: the ups and downs, good times and bad, joy and challenges.

Being a college student especially during these times, is never easy but learning to not only see the bad but as well as the positives can have a better impact on your well being and mental health. For example, meeting all the amazing people that have changed your life, learning more about yourself, not being afraid to be yourself, and learning about a topic you are genuinely interested in are all the wonderful things college has brought me.

Balance

It really took me a while to find this balance between physical health, mental health, school-work, relationships, work, and hobbies. Though it felt that as I progressed in school now being a third year I have tackled way more things than I did when I was a first year. Although, at the same time, I have grown and expanded my knowledge and understanding of how life works.

In our society specifically North America, we tend to idolize people who are constantly busy and see them as more important. From a young age we are roped into this way of thinking. For example being in multiple sports, being in a musical group (choir, band or orchestra) we rarely see kids being able to just be kids. But not only is it harming to children its difficult to get past this way of thinking as adults. We need to remember it is okay to take time for yourself.

I have learned that your mental well being is far more important than any assignment or class. Taking time for yourself is important and actually quite necessary. There should never be any guilt in that.

How I balance research on top of school work

The most important thing I have noticed is to be very organized. Map out your week on a calendar and put specific time slots of what you should be doing. Having a schedule time every week dedicated to meeting with your mentor to debrief and have assigned readings for the next week is a good way to keep on track. Its also just as important to communicate when you may feel overwhelmed and talk through it.
